Care Guide
Diamonds
Caring for your Ex Aurum diamond jewellery is
important to ensure it maintains its brilliance and sparkle over time. While
diamonds are the hardest natural substance on Earth, they still require proper
care to avoid damage, especially to the setting or any other components.
General Care instructions for Ex Aurum jewellery with Diamonds
Soapy Water and a Soft Brush: Clean your diamond jewellery regularly to remove dirt, oils and grime. A gentle cleaning solution of warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap is usually sufficient. Soak the jewellery for 20-30 minutes, then gently scrub it with a soft-bristled toothbrush to reach into the settings and any crevices.
Rinse and Dry: After cleaning, rinse the jewellery in clean water and dry it with a soft, lint-free cloth or towel. This will help restore the diamond’s natural shine and brilliance.
Chemical Exposure: Keep diamonds away from harsh chemicals, such as household cleaners, bleach or chlorinated water. These can damage the metal settings or cause a dulling of the diamond’s shine.
Perfume and Hair Products: Avoid applying perfumes, lotions, hairspray or makeup directly on your diamonds. These substances can leave a residue on the surface, reducing its sparkle.
Separate Storage: Store your diamond jewellery in a soft, lined jewellery box, pouch or in the original Ex Aurum packaging to prevent scratches or damage. Since diamonds can scratch other jewellery, it’s important to keep them separate from each other, especially softer metals or gemstones.
Use a Soft Pouch: For travel, place your diamond jewellery in individual soft cloth pouches to prevent it from getting scratched or knocked against other jewellery.
Avoid Hard Impact: While diamonds are hard, they are also brittle and can chip or crack if struck with enough force. Avoid wearing diamond jewellery during activities that could result in impacts or abrasions, such as sports, heavy lifting, or gardening.
Be Mindful of Settings: Check the prongs and setting of your diamond jewellery regularly to ensure they are secure. If a prong becomes loose, the diamond could become dislodged. It’s a good idea to have your jewellery checked by an Ex Aurum expertjeweller every 6-12 months. Visit the Ex Aurum Showroom to consult with our experts.
Before Cleaning or Cooking: Remove your diamond rings, bracelets or earrings when cleaning, cooking or performing any tasks that involve oils, dirt or chemicals. This will help protect the jewellery from damage or buildup.
During Sleeping or Exercise: Take off your diamond jewellery when sleeping or exercising to avoid unnecessary wear, tear, or impact that could damage the setting.
Regular Inspections: Have your diamond jewellery inspected by an Ex Aurum specialist jeweller at least once a year. This helps ensure the diamond is secure in its setting and that there is no damage or wear to the prongs, band, or metal. Visit the Ex Aurum Showroom to consult with our experts.
Repolishing and Replating: Over time, the metal in your jewellery may become worn or tarnished. Our expert jewellers can repolish or replate the metal to restore its appearance. This can also apply to any white gold or platinum settings, which may need rhodium plating to maintain their shine.
High Temperatures: While diamonds can withstand heat, it’s best to avoid exposing them to extreme temperatures. High heat can damage the metal setting or cause diamonds to shift.
Low Temperatures: Extremely cold temperatures are not likely to damage a diamond, but some settings may become brittle and prone to cracking if exposed to sudden temperature changes.
Some diamonds may have coatings or treatments (such as laser drilling or clarity enhancements). These treatments may require special care, so it's essential to consult with an Ex Aurum specialist to understand the specific maintenance requirements of your diamond.
Chlorinated or Saltwater: Avoid wearing your diamond jewellery while swimming in chlorinated pools or saltwater, as these environments can cause damage to the metal or the diamond’s setting over time.

Gemstones & Pearls
Caring for more delicate pieces, including
jewellery with gemstones other than diamonds, requires extra attention. Here
are some essential care instructions to help maintain your favorite Ex Aurum
jewellery’s beauty and longevity.
General Care Instructions for jewellery with gemstones and pearls
Keep your jewellery away from perfumes, hairsprays, cleaning products and other chemicals, as they can damage gemstones and pearls. These substances can cause discolouration, deterioration or loss of luster.
Pearls, in particular, are highly sensitive to chemicals and can become discoloured or damaged if exposed to harsh substances.
Remove your jewellery before swimming or taking a shower, especially when in chlorinated or salty water, as these elements can degrade the surface of gemstones and pearls.
Pearls can absorb moisture, which may cause them to swell, discolour, or lose their luster.
When not in use, store your jewellery in a soft, lined jewellery box to protect it from dust, scratches and impacts, or in the original Ex Aurum packaging.
For pearls, use a soft cloth or pouch to prevent them from coming in contact with other jewellery that could scratch their surface.
Store gemstones separately to avoid scratching them on harder surfaces or other jewellery pieces.
Clean gemstones and pearls with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove dirt and oils. Avoid abrasive cleaning tools or harsh cloths that could scratch the surface of the jewellery.
For gemstones like sapphires or emeralds, warm water with mild soap is typically safe for cleaning. Use a soft brush to gently clean any crevices.
For pearls, use a soft, damp cloth to wipe away oils and dirt. Do not immerse pearls in water or use cleaning solutions.
Always handle your jewellery gently to avoid dropping it or exposing it to sudden impacts, which could cause gemstones to crack or pearls to lose their luster.
When putting on or taking off jewellery, make sure to avoid pulling or tugging too hard, as this can weaken prongs or settings.
Avoid exposing your jewellery to extreme temperature fluctuations. Heat can cause gemstones to crack, while cold can make pearls brittle.
Pearls are particularly vulnerable to high heat, so always keep them away from hot surfaces or direct sunlight for long periods.
Over time, the string of a pearl necklace or bracelet will wear out. It’s essential to have pearls restrung regularly (typically every 1-2 years if worn on a regular basis) to ensure they are secure and in good condition. Contact us or visit the Ex Aurum Showroom to learn more about our restringing services.
Pearls and gemstones are often softer than other precious stones, so try not to wear your jewellery during activities that could lead to excessive friction or physical wear, such as sports, heavy lifting or cleaning.
