Beautiful Antique Engagement Rings

When it comes to engagement rings, contemporary designs are all the rage these days. Hot, new jewelers arrive on the scene each year showcasing avant-garde styles only to disappear into obscurity soon after. A rare few of today’s engagement rings design stars will be able to hold on to their success and provide the foundation for future trends, but the vast majority will not.

Spending so much time being inundated with a flood of look-alike modern engagement ring styles, it can be refreshing to look back at some of the best antique ring styles from decades past. In this article, we will be looking at some lovely engagement rings that were crafted with such classic style that their beauty transcends the years and  have become timeless in both beauty and elegance.

Today, most people ask for the current classic of white gold and diamond engagement ring but in the past, peoples’ tastes were more varied and exotic. Diamond rings also featured rubies, emeralds, and sapphires and bands were often platinum, yellow gold, or rose gold. The diamonds themselves were not always white, but could be pink or yellow. The use of color and contrast were very prevalent in antique jewelry.

The first engagement ring in our list is a gorgeous Old European-cut diamond and ruby ring that was set in rose gold. The center diamond is surrounded by a halo of 12 natural, French-cut rubies which provides wonderful contrast to the diamonds. The beautiful circular design creates an aura of Old World elegance and luxury. This engagement ring also features amazing and intricate millegrain detailing.

Our next ring is a majestic diamond and sapphire engagement ring. This Art Deco-styled ring features a round, European-Cut center diamond and is framed by a beautiful pattern made up of many baguette sapphires. In addition, this ring also has accent diamonds in a pave along the outer edges of the shank. The shank is made with 950 platinum instead of white gold.

This engagement ring features a large and beautiful sapphire as its center stone. Six prongs hold the exquisite 2.25 carat blue sapphire in place and is surrounded by 14 smaller diamonds. The shank was crafted with sterling silver which again shows a departure from today’s preference of white gold. The quality of the blue Ceylon Sapphire and the diamonds are terrific. The face of this antique engagement ring measures 14.4 mm x 12.4 mm. In addition, the detail of work on the back of the ring is exquisite.

This is another sapphire engagement ring which features a beautiful Burmese blue sapphire that weighs 2.8 carats. Made in the Art Deco style, this engagement ring has a wonderfully detailed and delicate millegrained bezel setting that also holds full halo of accent diamonds. The face of this impressive ring measures 13.7 mm across. Some of the finest sapphires in the world are found in Burma (known today as Myanmar) and the one used on this ring is a beautiful specimen.

This brilliant diamond engagement ring has a similar style to the previous ring on our list, but instead of a sapphire, it features a 2.25 carat center diamond. 14 smaller, yet equally beautiful accent diamonds are set around the center stone in a pave setting. The shank of this engagement ring is again made from 950 platinum.

An absolutely beautiful ring! This impressive engagement ring features a massive, yet high quality, Colombian emerald which weighs 16.7 carats. Its dimensions are: 16.13 mm x 15.61 mm. The entire ring is three-quarters of an inch wide and sits nearly 11 mm high off the finger. There are also 16 round-cut diamonds which frame the incredible center emerald and are set within an intricately-crafted 14K yellow gold, fully-bezelled millegrain, which is done in the late Victorian Era style. This engagement ring is a definite head-turner!
